The New International Version (NIV) has become one of the most popular translations. The tranlators used a balance between formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence in doing their translation work. Formal equivalence is also known as word-for-word translation. Dynamic equivalence is also known as thought-for-thought translation.

This familiar text from John 3:16 is a good example of the readability of this bible.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

This text edition contains only the Scriptures with no cross references or study notes and is off a style and size that fits the needs of a church for use as a pew bible.
